"We hope, we work towards a day when there will be no more girls cut. It will happen one day, God willing. It is possible," says Sedi, the Mauritanian midwife, who is leading a movement of change against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), along with other midwives across the country.

The end of FGM starts with people like Sedi. You, too, can also be part of this change.

Together, we can #EndFGM within a generation and support girls to fulfill their potential.

"I decided to stop mobilizing girls for cutting... I traveled all over this country (The Gambia). I met all the alkalis, chiefs, governors, Imams, women and youth. God willing, it [FGM] will not be practiced anymore," says Aja Babung, the Gambian changemaker and community leader who used to gather girls for the FGM ritual.

The end of FGM starts with people like Aja Babung. You, too, can also be part of this change.

Together, we can #EndFGM within a generation and support girls to fulfill their potential.

UNFPA’s State of World Population 2016 report shows how 10-year-old girls—60 million in number worldwide—are the face of our future. They are the starting point for achieving the globally agreed 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as well as the African Union’s Agenda 2063, and they can no longer be left behind if we are to realize the world and Africa we want. It is time to act to realize their human rights and unleash their potential.

Providing women and girls with equal access to education, is not only a fundamental human right, but a necessary foundation for a prosperous and sustainable world. As girls move into adolescence, gender disparities widen. In Nigeria this is seen in the number of out of school girls and the percentage increase of child marriage.
