To tackle the security and climate challenges in the Lake Chad Basin, a panel of governors, civil society actors, researchers, technical and financial partners discussed local and regional capacity building during a panel on climate change moderated by the Regional Director for West and Central Africa of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Dr. Sennen Hounton.

Solutions to the challenges of climate change in the region were outlined for sustainable development.

The paneil was held as part of the 4th edition of the Lake Chad Basin Governors' Forum organized by the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) in collaboration with the African Union Commission (AUC) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which took place in N'Djamena from July 05 to 07, 2023.

The cycles of drought, water scarcity, migration, security, flooding and conflict between communities were highlighted by the panelists and discussed with participants, as they are among the ills from which the Lake Chad Basin regions suffer and to which solutions must be found quickly.

The participants agreed that the stakes are high, that conflicts are escalating, and that we need to act fast with interventions that put people at the center of the action.

"We had heard from the Executive Secretariat of the Lake Chad Basin Commission, we had seen people, researchers, people from civil society intervene and say that we must rely on the people who are there. What I retain is the commitment, the inclusive participation and above all the search for appropriate solutions for today and for the future", concluded the Regional Director for West and Central Africa of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Dr. Sennen Hounton.
