The Resident Representative of the Niger office of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Mr. Saidou Kaboré, and the Deputy Head of Mission and Head of Cooperation of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Niger, Mr. Dietmar Bock, have signed an amendment to the funding agreement to accelerate the fight against female genital fistula in Niger.
This financing agreement marks Germany's commitment to supporting the country in achieving its maternal health objectives.
Results already achieved in 2021 and 2022 thanks to German support include:
- The treatment of 1,123 women suffering from obstetric fistula, of whom 1,031 underwent surgery and 92 were treated with catheters;
- Socio-economic reintegration of 1,100 women suffering from obstetric fistula;
- Training of 10 doctors in the repair of simple cases of obstetric fistula;
- 140 paramedics (including nurses and midwives working in fistula centers) trained in pre-, per- and postoperative care, to improve the quality of care offered to women suffering from FGM;
- Raising awareness among 455,387 people through campaigns organized in collaboration with community radio stations;
- The reinforcement of reception and accommodation capacities through the provision of 45 additional beds (Zinder 10 beds, Maradi 20 beds and Tahoua 15 beds) and a 50-place hangar;
On the basis of these results, Germany has renewed its confidence in the United Nations Population Fund by granting an additional 700,000 Euros on top of the initial 1,000,000 Euros for the holistic care of women suffering from obstetric fistulas.
