A consortium of organizations is organizing a virtual high-level side event on the theme: “Gender-Based Violence, Girls’ and Women’s Rights in the Central Sahel”, on the margins of a Ministerial Roundtable on Central Sahel, taking place 20 October 2020, in Copenhagen, Denmark. The high-level side event will take place on Friday, 16 October 2020, from 3:30 to 5:00 CEST (13:30 in Dakar, 14:30 in Abuja, 16:30 in Nairobi).

The event will draw attention on gaps and needs to prevent and respond to GBV in the Central Sahel and will call for concrete engagements by multiple stakeholders liking with the Call to Action on the Protection from GBV in emergencies and advocate for global solidarity around girls’ and women’s rights, and the elimination of gender-based violence.

Ms. Mette Thygesen from the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will deliver the keynote opening remarks and Mr Mabingue Ngom, UNFPA Regional Director for West and Central Africa, will chair the event. Young women from Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger will speak at the event, frontline actors will also share their experience and perspectives on the prevention, risk mitigation and response to gender based violence. Meanwhile, representatives from the concerned governments and partners will address the challenges underlined by women, girls and service providers.

Organized by Care International, Plan International, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Gender Based Violence Area of Responsibility (GBV AoR), the main objectives of the event are to amplify the voices and priorities of women and girls from the Sahel. Participants will have a unique opportunity to hear the stories of the affected women and girls and to learn from the first-hand experiences.
