Every woman everywhere deserves safe, respectful and high-quality care before, during and after pregnancy, childbirth and beyond. Yet daily, about 712 women die in pregnancy and childbirth.1 Each day there are about 6,300 newborn deaths and 5,200 babies are stillborn.2 Over 70 per cent of all maternal deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa, with 64 per cent of global maternal deaths occurring in countries classified as being in conflict or institutional/social fragility. For every woman who dies, 20 to 30 experience serious complications, often leading to lasting health challenges and disabilities.3
