Maternal mortality rates in West and Central Africa (WCA) are alarmingly high, representing a severe public health crisis and a grave violation of women’s human rights. WCA accounted for 62.7% of all maternal deaths in Sub-Saharan Africa in 2020. This crisis is driven by a complex interplay of factors, including inadequate healthcare infrastructure, insufficient investment in sexual and reproductive health services, gender inequalities, humanitarian crises, climate-induced disasters, child marriage, and persistent insecurity. The consequences of inaction are catastrophic, impacting families, communities, countries, and the region’s overall development. To address this urgent issue, the UNFPA West and Central African Regional Office (WCARO) has developed this roadmap for the accelerated reduction of maternal mortality. This strategic, action-oriented framework is anchored on equity, rights-based healthcare, and sustainable development. Spanning 5 action areas and 15 value-added interventions, this roadmap is anchored on three broad action pillars.
