POPULATION D'AFRIQUE N°6 : A 11 ans déjà, Mariama est l’une des figures de proue de la lutte contre les mariages et grossesses précoces, les mutilations génitales féminines et autres violences basées sur le genre au Sénégal. Elle est la présidente du ‘‘Club de jeunes filles leaders’’ de sa localité, une initiative développée en 2014 et à l’origine du « New Deal » ; un pacte entre clubs, parents, parrains et marraines de quartier pour obtenir zéro grossesse et favoriser le maintien des jeunes filles à l’école.

Cette publication, répond au désir d’atteindre les 17 Objectifs de développement durable (ODD), adoptés par les dirigeants du monde, lors du Sommet historique des Nations Unies en 2015, notamment l’ODD 17 : « Renforcer les moyens de mettre en œuvre le partenariat mondial pour le développement et le revitaliser ».

La publication est préfacée conjointement par S.E M. Mahamadou Issoufou, Président de la République du Niger et par Mme Amina J. Mohammed, Vice-Secrétaire générale des Nations Unies. Ils ont mis en évidence les efforts de l’UNFPA et ses nombreux partenaires pour mettre en œuvre l'ODD 17 en Afrique de l'Ouest et du Centre.

The official visit of UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Natalia Kanem was marked by her participation in the "25 Hours of Dakar", organized by AfriYAN, the African network of youth and adolescents in population and development with the presence of delegates from the 23 countries of West and Central Africa.

This event was an opportunity for young people in Africa to speak with one voice, in the run-up to the Nairobi Summit scheduled for 12-14 November 2019, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD).

The young people delivered the Dakar Declaration, inviting the Executive Director to convey their message to the Heads of State and world leaders at the upcoming Nairobi Summit, from 12 to 14 November 2019, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the ICPD. The Executive Director promised that their messages would be delivered.

In her maiden visit to Niamey, Niger, from 5 to 8 July UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Natalia Kanem addressed African leaders at a State dinner hosted by President Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger. The African Union (AU) leaders were in Niger for a mid-year coordination meeting, as well as an Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government that officially launched the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

During her address, she reported on the progress made 25 years after the landmark International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), was adopted in Cairo in 1994. She assessed the gaps and challenges, and invited the African leaders to recommit efforts aimed at accelerating the promise of availing access to sexual and reproductive health and rights to millions of women and girls.

The UNFPA Executive Director also participated in a roundtable conference aimed at mobilizing resources for the Sahel Women’s Empowerment and Demographic Dividend (SWEDD) project, as well as in in a high-level meeting on the elimination of child marriage and the promotion of girls' schooling in West Africa. Both activities were attended by President Mahamadou Issoufou, African First Ladies, Technical and Financial Partners, CEOs and NGOs, who reaffirmed their commitment to invest more in favor of women and girls to accelerate growth in Africa.

Dr. Natalia Kamem visited some UNFPA projects in the field and had discussions with beneficiaries and Staff of UNFPA in Niger.

UNFPA’s Executive Director marks imprint at AU Summit in Niamey, Niger!

The maiden visit of UNFPA’s Executive Director, Dr. Natalia Kanem to Niamey will remain historic. She was availed a rare opportunity to address the African Leaders, on the eve of the official launch of the African Continental Free Trade Zone at an Extraordinary Summit.

Dr. Natalia praised the African leaders for the visionary stewardship in upholding reproductive rights and services.

Attending the state dinner were over 1,000 guests, including over 15 Heads of State and Governments, First Ladies, Ministers, Members of the Diplomatic Corps, Technical and Financial Partners as well as Regional Economic Communities. Participation de l’UNFPA au sommet semi-annuel de l’Union africaine

Le Niger abrite le sommet semestriel de l’Union africaine, qui se tiendra à Niamey du 04 au 08 Juillet 2019. Cette rencontre majeure de Chefs d’Etat intervient dans le contexte de la célébration des 50 ans de UNFPA et des 25 ans de l’CIPD. Elle sera marquée par la présence de la Directrice Exécutive Dr. Natalia Kanem. Afin de saisir cette opportunité pour renforcer son plaidoyer, augmenter sa visibilité et commémorer avec les décideurs du continent les 25 ans CIPD25 et les 50 ans de l’UNFPA, le bureau régional UNFPA WCARO et le bureau pays du Niger organisent des évènements majeurs. Il s’agit notamment :

- Samedi le 06 juillet 2019 : Un table ronde régionale de mobilisations des ressources à l’Initiative du projet SWEDD ;

- Samedi le 06 juillet 2019 : Une intervention de 30 minutes de la Directrice exécutive, lors du Diner des Chefs d’Etat et du Gouvernement de l’UA et les premières dames ;

- Dimanche (matinée) le 07 juillet 2019 : Visite du terrain de la Directrice exécutive ;

- Dimanche (16h00-18h00) le 07 juillet 2019 : Side Event avec la fondation de la Première dame - Lutte contre le mariage d’enfants et la promotion de la scolarisation de la jeune fille en Afrique de l’Ouest.

Deputy Executive Director UNFPA Mr. Dereje Wordofa, visits Dakar

The Deputy Executive Director (Programs) for the United Nations Population Fund, Mr. Dereje Wordofa, visited Dakar from 15 to 18 June 2019. In Senegal, Mr. Dereje Wordofa addressed the First African Summit on Female Genital Mutilation and Child Marriage, where he advocated for the elimination of harmful practices and child marriage. As we commemorate UNFPA 50 & the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) Programme of Action adopted in 1994, in Cairo, Mr. Dereje Wordofa highlighted the progress made over the last 25 years in Africa. While in Senegal the UNFPA Deputy Executive Director also visited UNFPA-supported projects, and held meetings with government authorities, including Government ministers, as well as World Bank officials and UNFPA staff.
