The Tattaly Iyali Foundation of the First Lady of Niger, Dr. Lalla Malika Issoufou, with the support of ECOWAS, UNFPA, Plan International, UN Women, UNDP and UNICEF, organizes a meeting with the fifteen (15) First Ladies of West Africa on the sidelines of the African Union's First mid-year coordination meeting, as part of the celebrations of the 25th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) and the 50th anniversary of UNFPA.

This meeting is a follow-up to a special event organized by the Tattaly Iyali Foundation on the sidelines of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly, on best practices and community interventions to reduce child marriage and promote women’s empowerment and girls’ education. The event will avail a platform to showcase the impact of donor contributions in these areas.

Indeed, Niger is undertaking a number of initiatives including the adoption of a law on Reproductive Health, a decree on the protection, support and accompaniment of girls in schooling; the effective integration of comprehensive sexuality education into the secondary education curriculum; and the implementation of several community-based approaches to reducing child marriage.

This meeting will be an opportunity for the 15 First Ladies to issue the “Niamey Call to Action”, in the presence of AU Heads of State and Government, on the fight against child marriage, education and the maintenance of the girl at school.
